Design Firm and Local Family Partner to Build Green House in Needham, Massachusetts

Charlestown, MA (PRWEB) February 4, 2009 -- FreeGreen, the first residential design firm to give away free eco-friendly designs, has partnered with a Needham, MA-based family to design and document the construction of a green home. Every step of the family's home build will be documented in a special FreeGreen micro-blog (http://www.freegreen.com/green-home-build-story-needham-ma-house/). The blog will not only track the progress of the project but will also include daily posts about green home building, including home design, financing, builder management, product selection, and vendor selection and management.

At the end of the project, the family's green house plan will be made available to the public at no charge by visiting FreeGreen.com. The plan will include specification information on many of the products and methods that were used, as well as connections to local vendors.

"We wanted to work with FreeGreen to help change the perception of building green and demonstrate that traditional and green don't need to be mutually exclusive. We are building a traditional New England home with a local builder, but we are eager to incorporate many green features to both reduce our energy consumption and ensure a healthy environment for our family," said homeowner, Bob Glazer. "Before we began this process, we conducted a lot of research, but there was no place where we could view active green projects. We are excited that our project will be Freegreen's first residential home from which their users can actively follow and learn."

As green home building techniques and technologies enter the mainstream, many builders and homeowners are struggling to educate themselves about these new products and implement the technologies. Both the homeowner and builder need to select the materials and products that go into their homes earlier in the design phase. This dynamic has changed how companies market to these buyers and the timing of this marketing. According to David Wax, FreeGreen (http://www.freegreen.com/) CEO, "To meet desired performance goals, today's homes are becoming more sophisticated and complex in their design. Rather than being assembled as a collection of commodity materials, they are increasingly a combination of more sophisticated products and systems installed by specialized providers that are designed to work together. By showing the Glazer's, and eventually other user's, home building struggles, challenges, and decisions, we hope to educate the housing market and provide a better blueprint for the average consumer or contractor to build green."

The Glazer's original home design was optimized for energy performance and documented by ZeroEnergy Design (http://www.zeroenergy.com/). By opening up their project to the public, the Glazers will be able to work with FreeGreen product vendors who have agreed to dedicate time and resources to educating FreeGreen readers and the Glazer's about the design, availability and cost of different products and solutions. Through this symbiotic relationship, FreeGreen vendors get valuable exposure and advertising placement in the final free house plan with detailed product specifications. Those who follow the micro-blog and download the plan will also gain valuable insight from the chosen vendors and industry experts, including the ability to ask questions and receive product and service discounts for their own projects.

Current sponsors for this project include: Wolfers Lighting, Warmly Yours, PSV Design, Icynene, Healthy Home, Inc. GE Appliances, and Jarvis Appliance.
